Simply put, Black Hole is the magnum opus that Burns has been working toward for 20 years. Set in the ‘70s, this novel-length story bubbles with all of Burns’s favorite themes, from disease to horror to the darkest undercurrents of adolescence. A sexually-transmitted plague that only affects teenagers haunts the students at a Seattle high school. Causing grotesque deformities and skin conditions (the book’s protagonist, Rob, has grown a tiny mouth in his throat that spouts crypic messages), the most seriously afflicted are forced to set-up camps in the forest apart from “normal” society.
